Last days of summer

While Mat's mom was here visiting we decided to go to the Sawtooth Ridge Berry Fields near Indian Heaven Wilderness in Washington. We parked our car and went hunting.

We looked and looked for the Huckleberry; but the fields were filled with this berry, the Sitka Mountain Ash. A favorite of the grosbeak, but bitter and probably not very good in a pie. We continued to search.

Ava and Jack found an adorable Christmas tree.

Finally, we found the elusive huckleberry.

It was a very slow-going process...
perhaps this explains the empty container.
We picked, and picked, and picked,
and picked.
until our fingers were bloody (ok, maybe not bloody) and we had enough for a pie.

This is the view of Mt. Adams we had while picking.
